Demeke Mekonnen said Africa is doing its part for world peace
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Demeke Mekonnen, said Africa is playing its part in bringing peace to the world.
He made the remarks during an online discussion of African Union Peace and Security Council ministers.
Demeke expressed his respect for the peacekeepers who have sacrificed their lives in peacekeeping missions in various countries.
He noted that the establishment of multi-stakeholder forums, including the United Nations, was a key factor in promoting world peace and security.
He said the reduction in funding and logistics for peacekeeping missions has forced peacekeepers to carry out their duties under difficult circumstances. He also said that special attention should be paid to the current pandemic.
Demeke said it is important for the AU Peace and Security Council to be involved in UN peacekeeping policies and plans, given the practical experience of peacekeeping missions.
According to Demeke, Africans need to take a united stand to address the challenges of African peacekeeping missions.
