It was decided to form the 11th region of southwestern Ethiopia
The House of Federation has decided to establish South West Ethiopia as the 11th region based on the results of the referendum.
The House of Peoples’ Representatives today approved the results of the first emergency session of the 6th term of the parliament.
The House of Representatives approved the referendum after a report by National Electoral Board Chairperson Birtukan Mideksa and a recommendation by the Standing Committee on Identity, Boundaries and Peacebuilding.
After deliberating on the resolution, the House unanimously approved the reorganization of Southwest Ethiopia as the 11th region.
Five zones and one woreda in southwestern Ethiopia held a referendum on September 20, 2014.
In the referendum, 1,221,992 voters cast their ballots in support of the establishment of a common zone in the five zones and one special woreda.
On the other hand, 24,24 votes were cast in favor of remaining part of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region.
It is to be recalled that the National Electoral Board informed the House of Federation in a letter of the outcome of the referendum.
According to ENA, the House of Federation has decided to form an 11th state based on the results of a referendum held in southwestern Ethiopia today.
One of the functions and responsibilities of the Council is to provide a constitutional solution to the question of national self-determination or self-government.
