Statement from the Ethiopian Media Professionals Association regarding the 6th national election to be held tomorrow !!
First and foremost, we wish the electorate a happy election and a peaceful end.
Voting is one of the most important part of the election process. A number of local and international media outlets have reported on the election, with more than 38 million registered voters (including Pugme voters).
According to information obtained from the National Electoral Board, 68 media outlets and 1,400 reporters have been licensed to report by the Board. According to a statement issued by the Media Authority yesterday, 89 international journalists have been licensed to enter the country.
These local and international reporters are currently working in Addis Ababa and other parts of Ethiopia.
Journalists are expected to be professional in their reporting and reporting process. It is the duty of the concerned parties to provide the necessary information to the journalists.
He believes that the Media Authority, the Media Council, Inter News and all other stakeholders, including our association, have provided training on election reporting and data collection in advance with the aim of providing reliable, accurate, balanced and up-to-date election information to the public.
Therefore, our association strongly urges all election experts to ensure that their election reports are impartial, balanced, accurate and up-to-date.
Elections held in various countries indicate that false and mixed information is widely distributed during elections. Therefore, our association urges journalists and the media to play a more professional role in the face of confusion due to the lack of a national and independent intelligence agency with the exception of a few data institutions and individuals.
In this case, our association understands that the National Electoral Board has formed an information verification team. Our association appreciates that the communication department is holding daily press conferences to provide up-to-date information, and that it is working to cooperate when reporters request information. Our association recommends that this rapid exchange of information alleviate the shortage of information faced by journalists and reduce the risk of misinformation.
On the other hand, we urge all reporters in various locations to work diligently and carefully to report any problems you may have to the relevant security forces and our association.
Finally, we call on all parties to provide the necessary cooperation to ensure accurate, timely, impartial and balanced election reports and wish all the best for the electorate.
