Sudan wants to buy 1,000 megawatts of power, says Ethiopian Electric Power
Ethiopian Electric Power Corporate Planning Executive Director, Andualem Sia, said various African countries, including Sudan, have expressed interest in purchasing electricity from Ethiopia.
He said South Sudan, Kenya and Djibouti have already expressed interest in purchasing power from Ethiopia.
“Sudan needs 1,000 megawatts of power,” he said. Andualem said his institution is in talks with Sudanese experts.
He said the institute’s staff had headed to Khartoum last month and that Sudanese experts would soon arrive in Ethiopia to continue the talks.
He said the construction of a 500kW transmission line for Kenya’s electricity supply is nearing completion.
He said Ethiopia has built 2,000 megawatts of infrastructure beyond Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa.
He said a study is being conducted with East Africa Power Policy with the support of the World Bank to enable Somaliland to get power from Ethiopia.
“South Sudan has expressed its desire for power in a letter,” he said. Following this, a team of experts will soon travel to South Sudan to conduct a study on the construction of the power line.
According to ENA, Andualem said the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is of great significance not only to Ethiopia but also to Africa.
He said the current demand for electricity from the countries also shows their hope for the dam.
“Ethiopia will work harder and be proud of Africa,” he said.
