EthioTelecom, in collaboration with Visa, officially launched the first wallet virtual Visa card in Ethiopia, as well as services called Visa Direct and Telebirr Remit, which greatly modernize Hawala.
Beyond basic connectivity services, Ethio Telecom is providing wide access to modern technologies and digital solutions that improve the economic and social environment of our country, update the procedures of institutions and update the daily lifestyle of citizens. Today, for the first time in our country, we have entered into a strategic partnership agreement with the world’s oldest Visa company to provide international money transfer services called VISA Direct and telebirr Remit services, which allow customers to have a wallet virtual visa card and significantly update the existing hawala services. .
The Visa Direct service enables Visa card users living in various foreign countries to transfer money to the country using only the Telebr virtual card number, which allows both individuals and institutions to send money to the country from more than 190 countries with much greater efficiency and lower service fees than the existing Hawala service. To receive money from overseas via Visa Direct, customers must first register with the Telebr Virtual Visa service in the Telebr SuperApp and share the 16-digit virtual Visa card number with the sender, which will be received one hour after registration.
The Telebr Remit service is a service that allows users living abroad to send money directly to their friends and relatives through their Telebr mobile number through Abyssinia Bank’s cyber source payment gateway technology by installing the rich Telebr Remit application on their phones. With this service, customers can receive money by remittance from nine countries, namely America, Canada, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Italy and Sweden, by sharing their Telebr mobile number and installing the modern Telebr Remit application developed by our company for this service. It will be expanding.
In general, this agreement will allow customers to get a virtual Visa card number and offer better options than regular Hawala through Visa Direct and Telebr Remit, and further expand the scope of services by enabling cross-border payments (including e-commerce) to be made easily online, which will greatly expand access to the digital financial ecosystem, benefiting citizens. It contributes to providing new services that enhance and encourage job creation and to create a cashless society.
In addition to reaching 47.55 million Telebr customers in the fiscal year 2016, our company has carried out several projects to provide digital services to the public and ensure financial inclusion. It is known that it is accelerating the journey started to realize the vision of Digital Ethiopia by collaborating with the Bank and the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia.
