Ethiopia farewell for her beloved artist Netsanet Workineh

The funeral of beloved Ethiopian artist Netsanet Workneh (also spelled Netsanet Workineh, ነፃነት ወርቅነህ), the renowned actor, comedian, filmmaker, and television host, took place shortly after his passing on January 16, 2026, following a prolonged illness. He was 42 years old (born April 11, 1983).

As a major cultural figure and household name—especially known for hosting the popular family game show Ye Beteseb Chewata on EBS TV, as well as starring in films like FBI, Freshman, Yanchiw Leba, Bale Qelem Hilmoch, Mr. X, and Chombe—his death sent shockwaves across Ethiopia. The nation mourned deeply, with tributes pouring in from fans, colleagues, and even Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who recalled Netsanet’s joyful performance during the 2016 Ethiopian New Year celebrations at the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

Funeral arrangements were quickly coordinated by his family, colleagues at EBS TV, and fellow artists. Given the timing (death on January 16), the funeral ceremony occurred around January 18, 2026, aligning with traditional Ethiopian Orthodox Christian practices that often hold burials within a few days of passing, especially in cases of illness.

The event was a large, emotional gathering in Addis Ababa, attended by thousands of mourners, including many from the entertainment industry who came to pay their final respects. It featured live broadcasts and streaming (as seen in various online transmissions titled “የተወዳጁ አርቲስት ነፃነት ወርቅነህ የቀብር ስነ-ስርአት ቀጥታ ስርጭት”), allowing fans across the country and diaspora to participate virtually.

The atmosphere combined profound grief with celebration of his life—filled with heartfelt eulogies, shared memories of his humor, humility, mentorship of younger artists, and ability to unite families through laughter. Many described him as a “cultural bridge” who remained accessible and grounded despite fame. His wife, three children, extended family, and close friends received widespread condolences.

Netsanet Workneh’s legacy endures through his extensive body of work in Ethiopian cinema, theater, and television, which continues to bring joy to audiences. His funeral stood as a powerful testament to the deep love and respect he earned throughout his career—a true reflection of how profoundly he touched Ethiopian hearts. May his soul rest in peace. 🕊️
