The Weldiya-Kobo-Alamata road has been reported to be completely out of service due to the collapse of a bridge.
Ethiopia | The Amhara Region Road Bureau has informed the Federal Roads Administration in a written letter about the damage caused by the collapse of a steel bridge over the Hamid River, which is part of the route connecting Weldiya and Kobo.
The bridge, located 14 kilometers from Kobo town between Robit and Gobiye towns, is situated on the main asphalt road linking Weldiya, Kobo, and Alamata.
The damaged steel bridge, which is 50 meters long, was constructed eight years ago by the Ethiopian Roads Administration and had been in service since then.
It has been noted that the bridge collapsed due to heavy traffic and excessive load, as it is located in an area with high traffic flow.
As a result, the asphalt road connecting Weldiya to Kobo and Alamata has been completely closed to traffic, according to the bureau.
The absence of an alternative route in the area has led to a complete halt in transportation services, as well as economic and social interactions.
The North Wollo Zone Government Communication Affairs has indicated that the Amhara Region Road Bureau has requested the Ethiopian Roads Administration to urgently repair the damaged steel bridge over the Hamid River and reopen the road, taking into account the severity of the situation in the area.
