Addis Ababa City Administration Fire Safety Advisory

The Addis Ababa Fire Risk Management Commission has issued an important reminder to exercise caution to prevent emergencies stemming from negligence and carelessness.

The Commission emphasizes that most incidents leading to loss of life and property are the result of such negligence. To protect lives and properties, the following safety measures should be implemented to eliminate operational errors that may cause accidents:

➡️ Use electricity, butane gas, stoves, and charcoal grills properly and with care in cooking areas.

➡️ In shopping centers, be vigilant to prevent fires from electronic decorations used to attract shoppers’ attention.

➡️ Keep flammable objects away when using candles and torches.

➡️ If preparing a campfire, ensure it is fully extinguished before leaving the area.

➡️ Do not attempt to extinguish an electrical fire with water unless the power has been disconnected.

➡️ When using fireworks, ensure they do not land near gas stations, lawns, or other flammable materials.

➡️ Avoid drinking and driving; prioritize safety.

➡️ Do not overload electrical sockets by using multiple devices on the same outlet.

➡️ Take proactive measures to eliminate potential hazards that could lead to accidents.

The Commission also informs the public that for any fire emergencies or ambulance services, assistance can be reached by calling the following numbers 24/7:

Free hotline: 939
