Below you will see how Ethiopian Electric Corporation calculates your electric usage bill.

This is an official message by the Ethiopian Electric Service statement translated to English.
Are you aware of how your monthly electricity bill is calculated and what issues it covers? Let’s discuss this together.
When a residential customer pays their monthly electric bill, it includes the service charge, a regulatory fee paid to the regulatory authority, additional value-added tax, a service charge for the TV, and an additional value-added tax on the service charge.
Moreover, the electricity consumed by customers in a month is based on a current tariff rate, which encompasses the charges listed above.
For example, from December to March, a customer using between 400 to 500 kilowatt-hours will have a current tariff rate of 3.73 birr. Therefore, if we assume that our customer consumed 450 kilowatt-hours in a month:
- Monthly electricity bill = 450 kWh * 3.73 birr (current tariff rate) = 1678.5 birr
- Service charge for customers consuming over 50 kWh = 44.85 birr
- Additional value-added tax on service charge = Service charge * 15% = 44.85 birr * 15% = 6.7275 birr
- Regulatory fee paid to the authority = (Monthly electricity bill + Service charge) * 0.5% = ((450 * 3.73) + 44.85) * 0.5% = 8.616 birr
- Additional value-added tax / VAT = (Monthly bill x Current tariff rate) * 15% = (450 kWh * 3.73) * 15% = 251.775 birr
- For customers consuming over 50 kWh, a payment of 10 birr is made to the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (ETV).
Based on the above calculation, the total monthly electricity bill for our customer would be the sum of: Monthly electricity bill (1678.5 birr) + Service charge (44.85 birr) + Additional value-added tax on service charge (6.7275 birr) + Regulatory fee (8.616 birr) + Additional value-added tax (251.775 birr) + Service charge for ETV (10 birr), totaling 2000.468 birr.
