More than 143,000 condominium houses are under construction in Addis Ababa.

A total of 143,295 houses under construction in Addis Ababa under the 40/60 and 20/80 housing development programs are under construction and 4,287 houses started in the 2012 Ethiopian budget year, according to the Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure.

Senior officials of the Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure, together with Addis Ababa City Administration Housing Development and Administration Bureau officials as well as stakeholders visited the performance of condominium houses being constructed by the city administration on November 10, 2014.

Among the sites visited by the leaders were Bole Arabsa, Bole Ayat, Megenagna and the new 40/60 and 20/80 condominium houses launched in the 2012 Ethiopian budget year.

Out of the 143,295 houses under construction in the city administration, 101,594 houses are 20/80 and 41,261 houses are under construction under the 40/60 housing program.

It is planned to complete the construction of 107,768 houses under the 20/80 housing development program by February 30, 2014. The achievement has reached 97.86 percent.

According to the 40/60 housing development program, 38,240 houses are being completed by February 30, 2014. The current performance has reached 92.24 percent.

During the visit, contractors noted that the shortage of cement, rising cement prices and inadequate supply of factories, lack of coordination of infrastructure, capacity constraints and financial constraints, and financial constraints were hampering the completion of projects on time.

Addis Ababa City Administration Housing Development and Administration Bureau Head Yasmin Whabrebi; He said the city administration has been able to make several low-income groups homeowners with various housing options in the past years.

State Minister for Urban and Infrastructure, Khalid Abdurahman, on his part, said the housing development program is designed to address the housing problem.

According to information obtained from the Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure, contractors, experts from the Water and Sewerage Authority, the Roads Authority, the Electric Power, the Bank and various institutions participated in the visit.
