Lalibela rock-cut churches suffer from lack of tourism

Lalibela's rock-hewn churches, a World Heritage Site, are in dire straits due to a lack of tourism activity due to the Covd-19 and the war.

 

The monastery's administrator and pope made a statement on the current state of the Lalibela rock-cut churches.

 

Currently, no tourists are coming to the area, and more than 10,000 priests and their families have been affected.

 

The monastery's administrator, Abba Tsige Selassie, said more than 100 staff, 800 model students, and 200 elderly people, as well as orphans, were in trouble.

 

He called on the government and other stakeholders to support the monastery.

 

Archbishop Abune Ermias of the Diocese of North Wollo, South Wollo and Kemise said the rock-hewn churches of St. Lalibela are one of the most important monuments in Ethiopia.

 

However, he said that the current situation of the monastery should be supported by all.

 

He said a fundraising event will be held in Addis Ababa this weekend.

 

According to ENA, the people are also suffering from the lack of electricity and water supply in the area.

German parliamentary delegation holds talks with Ethiopian counterpart

Ethio-German Parliamentary Diplomacy will be strengthened, the House of Peoples 'Representatives' Foreign Affairs and Peace Affairs Standing Committee has received a delegation from the German Parliament.

 

Chairman of the Standing Committee, Dr. Dima Negewo, recalled that Ethiopia and Germany have a long and strong diplomatic relationship.

 

Dr. Dima also told members of the delegation that the government is providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Tigray who have been affected by the fighting.

 

He said the government is working hard to resolve differences through dialogue and consultation by establishing a National Consultative Commission to ensure lasting peace in the country.

 

He said Ethiopia is constructing the Grand Renaissance Dam with the contribution of its own people to alleviate poverty and the dam is focused on mutual benefit.

 

He said Germany is supporting technology with strong ties with the country, adding that it will continue to support investment, education, technical and institutional reconstruction in the future.

 

For his part, German Chancellor Rodriguez Quizweater said the two countries have strong ties.

He recalled that Germany is supporting Ethiopia economically, especially in the telecom sector, adding that it will continue to strengthen its support for education, exchange of knowledge and technology.
