Construction to prevent floods in Awash River has not been completed due to lack of budget

Addis Ababa: The construction of 1.2 billion birr dam to protect the Awash River from flooding during the winter months has not been completed yet.

Officials of the Regional Disaster Risk Management Commission and Busa Gonofa have expressed their concern to Fana Broadcasting Corporation that the river could cause accidents every year if the construction work is not completed.

The Federal Ministry of Water and Energy, for its part, said it is awaiting the request of the riparian council to release the budget as soon as possible.

Every year, the Awash River causes severe damage to human life and property in Afar, eastern Oromia, and southern regions.

As a result, the grievances of the majority of the population remain unanswered.

The projects started by the Ministry of Water and Energy and the Regional Water and Energy Bureau have not been completed due to lack of budget.

 Ahmed Shima, head of the state's water and energy bureau, said the budget has been diverted due to past existence campaigns.

According to Mustafa Kedir Lefana Fana Broadcasting Corporation, the head of the region, Busa Gonofa, is working to prevent flooding in the affected areas, especially in areas along the Awash River.

He said various flood relief efforts have been launched in the region to prevent the flooding of the Awash River.

Federal Minister of Water and Energy, Dr. Habtamu Itefa, told us that he was again requesting the release of the money.

Speaking to our site, the Minister said that due to the fact that the budget has not been released yet, it has not been possible to do the work.

He also said that half of the budget allocated for 2013 should be released and work should be done before the crisis arrives.

However, states should wait until the flood season arrives and the budget is released, he said.
