"We have to pay our electricity bills" - Addis Ababa residents

***************************

Some Addis Ababa residents said they complained about the increase in monthly electricity bills.

Residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told ABC Cyber Media:

In particular, the complainants noted that this year has seen an increase in monthly payments.

However, Melaku Taye, Corporate Communication Director of Ethiopian Electric Service, said there has been no increase in the price of electricity service.

On the other hand, he said that the tariff adjustment has been done on the service and this has been implemented annually for the past four years.

As a result, the service announced the 4th and final tariff adjustments in December 2014.

It is also seen that the tariff adjustment is aimed at supporting and benefiting the majority of the low-income community.

It is also said that a high-powered customer can pay as much as they used to, but most users can subsidize.

According to the tariff adjustment, customers who use up to 50 kW per month are 100% subsidized and are not subject to any tariff adjustment.

Customers who use 100 kilowatts per month subsidize 75 percent, and customers who use 200 kilowatts a month receive 25 percent of the adjustment subsidy.

However, customers who use more than 200 kW every month are required to pay the full tariff adjustment, according to the Ethiopian Electric Service.

He also noted that if a customer is asked for an exorbitant price increase, he can lodge a complaint with the branch office.

The purpose of the tariff adjustment is to cover 60 to 70 percent of the electricity infrastructure purchased in foreign currency, the service said.
