More than 171 million birr worth of contraband items were seized

Over 171 million 421 thousand birr worth of contraband goods were seized last week.

During the past week, 166 million 194 thousand birr worth of contraband goods and 5 million 226 thousand birr worth of contraband items were seized from various branches of the Customs Commission.

The Addis Ababa Airport, Moyale and Kombolcha branch offices are in the forefront of controlling contraband, with contraband items worth over 28.2 million, 23.6 million and over 22.4 million birr, respectively, according to the commission.

The smuggled goods were seized by customs officials, federal police, regional police and the community, and eight people were arrested for smuggling the contraband.

The seized contraband includes clothing, fuel, livestock, electronics, coffee, medicine, vehicles, cosmetics, weapons, khat, drugs and various national currencies.

The Customs Commission would like to thank all the staff, members of the State and Federal Police, and all our people who have been involved in this enforcement operation.

The Customs and Excise Commission has called on all stakeholders and the public to play their part in curbing the smuggling and illegal trade.
