Gastric ulcer causes and treatment

Addis Ababa, May 2023:  Gastric ulcer usually affects the stomach and the small intestine next to the stomach.

Fana Broadcasting Corporate had an interview with internal medicine specialist Dr. Mifta Delil Ahmed regarding the causes and treatment of gastric ulcer.

According to Dr. Mifta, the stomach produces acid and other digestive enzymes to facilitate the digestion process, and the stomach, which is made of protein, has its own way of protecting itself from digestion.

If one of these pathways is disrupted or if there is too much acid, peptic ulcers can occur.

He said that bacteria can be another cause of gastric ulcer. Bacteria weakens the stomach's ability to defend itself and attacks it with acids and enzymes, causing gastric or intestinal ulcers to occur.

Another cause of colon ulcer is long-term use of analgesics such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and diclofenac, according to the expert.

Worrying, staying in intensive care due to severe pain, risk of burns, even in car accidents, because the blood going to the stomach is reduced and the stomach cannot defend itself, it is easily injured.

Dr. Mifta says that there are many symptoms of gastric ulcer, burning sensation under the chest, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, blood retention are the main ones.

In particular, if the vomit contains dark coffee grounds, if the stool is very dark and bloody, it is a sign of severe gastric ulcer, so the patient should consult a doctor immediately.

Most of the time, intestinal ulcers occur in the last part of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine, and when the wound is repeatedly injured and healed, it can cause gastric obstruction or intestinal obstruction.

The expert pointed out that if a stomach ulcer patient has vomiting, severe weight loss and anemia, they are symptoms of severe stomach ulcer and should be seen immediately at a health facility.

People with peptic ulcers are advised to stop smoking, alcohol, coffee, tea, etc., especially if they are taking medication to treat the ulcer.

He also said that eating at the right time and not eating too much at once is one of the ways to prevent stomach ulcers from getting worse.
