Action taken against more than 103,000 illegal entities - Ministry of Trade and Regional Co-operation

Ministry of Trade and Regional Coordination says legal and administrative action has been taken against 103,901 illegal entities that are exacerbating inflation and cost of living.

The House of Peoples' Representatives, in its 5th regular session, heard the report of the Ministry of Trade and Regional Relations on the implementation of the eight-month plan.

He said a national trade and quality policy as well as an export strategy and legal framework are being developed to address the challenges facing the trading system.

Council members called for special assistance to traders whose property has been destroyed due to insecurity in Ethiopia, inflation of basic commodities, fuel shortages and rising rents.

They raised questions about the proliferation of illegal brokers, efforts to create market linkages with the consumer, and the mishandling of government officials and private investors.

Minister of Trade and Regional Co-operation, Gebremeskel Chala, said those who were unable to renew their business licenses in the Afar and Amhara regions were given access to and renewed services without penalty.

Efforts have been made to stabilize the market by taking legal and administrative action against 103,901 illegal entities that are exacerbating inflation and cost of living, he said.

According to information received from the House, members of the House of Representatives have also been informed that a law regulating the cost of rent and the living standards of government officials should be drafted.
