The Addis Ababa Driver and Vehicle Licensing and Control Authority has announced that action will be taken against vehicles that have been illegally imported since the last nine years.

According to Bedlu Lelisa, the deputy director general of the authority's vehicle sector, told the Ethiopian Press Organization; The government is doing many things to prevent illegality. One of them is the identification of illegally imported cars from the last nine years. It has been a month since it started.

"In the research done by the authority together with the Addis Ababa Revenue Bureau, there are situations where the amount of money registered by the authority and the receipts cut to the Revenue Bureau are not the same. In this way, it has been confirmed that there is a wide difference between the invoice for the price of new vehicles and the price that buyers pay for the car," he said.

The Deputy Director General stated that the government is not getting the tax revenue it should get from the purchase and sale of vehicles. He said that in order to overcome this and similar problems, the work of identifying illegally imported cars has been started since the last nine years.

"The institution faces two types of illegal activities at different times," said the head. They mentioned that they were imported from the region and were registered with forged documents. He stated that a modern system to check the legality of the cars is being developed to help prevent this.

"This investigation has been going on for the past nine years," Badlu said. Stating that in the past, when a car dealer transferred a car in his name to another person, no verification work was done; "Through this, the government did not get the tax it deserved. But now it has been possible to establish a new system together with the Gumuruk Commission," he said.

"The system not only allows the government to get the tax it deserves from vehicles, but also prevents car buyers from being defrauded and strengthens the government's efforts to prevent illegality." In the process, illegally imported cars will be confiscated," he said.

He added: "Buyers of new cars should make sure that the price they pay is mentioned on the receipt. Apart from the fact that doing this will bring many benefits to the buyer, the revenue collected will be used for the city's infrastructure, so it should be seen responsibly," he said.
