If the Ride Taxi Service Tariff is not assessed by the government, you will not benefit from the fuel subsidy

• It is said that when the subsidy goes up, it can exceed 60 birr per liter of fuel.

It was pointed out that if the tariffs charged by Ride or Salon taxi operators were not determined by the government, they would not benefit from the fuel subsidy.

With the exception of public transport providers, the fuel subsidy for all vehicles will be implemented after two and a half months, after which the price of fuel will be assessed on the world market.

Targeted fuel price subsidy will be implemented and will be used in selected transport services, with limited support, according to a resolution approved by the Council of Ministers by the Ministry of Trade and Regional Cooperation.

An official with the ministry, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, told The Reporter that the fuel subsidy was needed to reduce government spending and help low-income citizens.

The official told The Reporter that non-government tariffs are also not part of the subsidy, adding that it is an important decision despite fears that it will put a strain on middle-income citizens.

According to The Reporter, when the subsidy is introduced, the retail price adjustment will take place in the world of petroleum products, which will be implemented for no more than five years.

In addition to carriers who have agreed to operate under government-controlled tariffs, drivers who provide public transport services will also benefit.

Three-wheelers, code 1 and 3 minibuses, city buses, cross-country buses and up to 47 public transport providers will be eligible for the subsidy.

Habtamu Tadesse, founder and general manager of Zai Ride, one of the salon taxi service providers, said he was disappointed that the subsidy did not include such service providers and warned that it could worsen the transport shortage.

Habtamu told The Reporter that he would not only aggravate the problem of remittance services but also reduce the amount of tax collected by the service providers and slow down the growth of the sector.

Over the past five years, more than 40 Salon Taxi service providers have joined the market, with an estimated 30,000 vehicles. They currently charge an average of ten birr per kilometer.

According to Habtamu, the increase in the price of a liter of petrol is expected to reach more than 60 birr in accordance with current international oil prices.
