#Ethiopia Arba Moyong University and Bonga University have jointly established the first Enset Processing Pilot Plant in the South West Ethiopia region, which is the largest producer of Enset, in the campus of Bonga University and officially started work on December 12, 2016.

According to the Biotechnology teacher and researcher at Arba Moyong University and the coordinator of the Enset project, Dr. Al-Ashwe Fikadu, the work was done with a financial support of more than 800 thousand Birr based on a request from Bonga University with the aim of bringing the technologies to western Ethiopia.

Arba Moyong University has produced and handed over to Bonga University a variety of rice processing machines for two sites, establishing the first rice processing test center in the Southwest region of Ethiopia and the 4th in the country, according to Dr. Al-Ashwey.

According to Dr. The new university, apart from providing machines and cooking resources, Bonga University also trained the young people who were trained to work at the center in the use of the machines, cooking and yeast use.

Dr. Tolera Seda, Director of the Directorate of University-Industry Linkage and Technology Transfer, pointed out that the university is currently working with Wolkite, Debremarkos and Bahir Dar universities to promote and expand Enset and technologies developed and tested in practice around Enset.

In addition, Dr. Tolera added that the university has signed an agreement with the Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Agency and five private companies that produce the technologies, which will help to spread and introduce the technologies, and which aims to produce 100 machines and deliver them to the growing areas.

Dr. Tolera stated that the benefits of the hemp processing center established at Bonga are multi-faceted as the area is a major hemp grower. He said that the technologies created based on research have not only enhanced the name and reputation of the university, but also opened doors for us to find partners who work with us in other fields.

Bonga University's academic, research, technology transfer and community services president Dr. Kelelu said that Southwestern Ethiopia is one of the areas where sugarcane is widely produced, which is one of the areas where the university is focusing on research.

He said that due to various reasons in the area, the production and use of plants is decreasing, the university is working on the adaptation of selected species of plants and propagation of seedlings to the community.

The president stated that the university has large rice fields, and with the aim of processing the products from the fields in a modern way as a research facility and marketing the products, it has been possible to establish a modern rice processing experimental center in cooperation with the pioneer in the field, Arba Moshan University.
