After 4 months, 3 more turbines of Renaissance Dam will be put into operation - Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.)

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.) told ETV that after 4 months, 3 more turbines of Renaissance Dam will be put into operation and a total of 7 turbines will start generating power.

He also said that the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam will be able to hold more than 70 billion cubic meters of water until next December. 

The prime minister said that the civil work of the dam will reach 100 percent in December. He pointed out that the entire work of the dam will reach the completion stage this year. 

He said that in addition to the flow of the Nile River continuing unhindered, the dam's water vent gates have been opened and 2,800 cubic meters of water per second have started to flow. 

He said that when the water is rising, we have done the work of draining the dam so that it does not interfere with the construction work.  

The Prime Minister said that the amount of water we take every day is very high because of the heavy rainfall this year. He mentioned that if the vent had not been opened, the dam would have overflowed in 10, maximum 15 days. 

He said that the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam will control the flow of water, reduce the risk of flooding and provide water supply to the downstream countries, especially during the drought. 

He said that this measured and balanced release of water will be very useful to enhance agriculture, power generation and resource utilization rates in the region. 

He said that apart from what we release to the downstream countries through turbines, we will release that much more water to them by reducing the water below because we did not want to be a special user.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (Dr.) said that this water is our common wealth. They said that our responsibility as a nation and as a people is to use as much as we deserve and share with our brothers as much as they deserve.
