Important preparations are underway to launch Ethiopia's second earth observation satellite: the institute

**********************************

The Ethiopian Space Science and Geo-Spatial Institute stated that important preparations are underway to launch Ethiopia's second and better quality earth observation satellite.

The Ethiopian Space Science and Geo-Spatial Institute has planned to launch three satellites in a 10-year plan, according to the head of the institute's communication department, Girma Dejene.

Among these three satellites, the first earth observation satellite (ETRSS-1) was launched into space and it has been in space for the past three years and has been providing a lot of information and is still providing information.

They said that now, various works are being done to launch the second earth observation satellite, which is intended to provide more services with better image quality than the first one.

He pointed out that a feasibility study has been carried out to launch the satellite, and he said that the necessary research and resources to launch the satellite are being carried out.

He pointed out that the satellite has a high importance in strengthening the country's information in agriculture, environmental protection, tourism and various land management and the like.

He stated that it is the third communication satellite among the three satellites that are expected to be launched in this planning period, and said that the work of launching the satellite is in progress.

He also said that the communication satellite is working together with the sectors that are getting the same service.

He also explained that although communication satellite requires a very high cost, its feasibility is not easy, so it is planned to be implemented in the next few years.

He also explained that the earth observation satellite that was launched into space for the first time in 2012 was not easy to contribute to the water filling of the Great Renaissance Dam and the land surveying that took place in the area.

He also pointed out that apart from the services provided by this historic satellite, it has made Ethiopia one of the countries that have satellites.

He also said that when the earth observation satellite stops working, a multi-satellite data receiving station has been built at the Entoto observatory center to replace it.

They explained that the receiving station is capable of receiving information from five or more satellites of other countries.

He mentioned that since the science and technology of satellite launch was new, it was being done by foreign experts, and now that the professional capacity in the field has increased, only Ethiopians will participate in the satellites that will be launched from now on, ESA reported.

Earth observation satellites provide services for agriculture, environmental protection, tourism, and especially for early warning of floods that may occur in some cases.
