The increasing vulnerability of young people to mental illness in Ethiopia.

According to the World Psychiatrists Association's report last year, mental illness among young people is a health crisis that is increasing all over the world.

The report indicates that this crisis is getting worse especially with the expansion of the digital environment.

The same report mentions that the fact that young people communicate using social networking sites is one of the issues that have increased their vulnerability.

The report highlights that there are many physical and social risk factors for mental illness in young people.

In Ethiopia, the vulnerability of young people to mental illness is increasing.

Ato Zegye Yohannes, director of research and training at Emmanuel Specialized Mental Hospital, told Fana Broadcasting Corporation that the vulnerability of young people to mental illness is increasing.

According to recent studies, 29 percent of young people in the world are at risk of mental illness, and 12 percent of young people in Ethiopia are at risk of mental illness.

Although various reasons have been cited for the prevalence of mental illness among young people, they pointed out that the vulnerability of young citizens to addiction occupies the highest place.

In addition to addiction, genetics, hormonal changes during youth, and various social crises are risk factors for mental illness, he said.

The expert who stated that the exposure of productive youth to mental illness causes various social problems, says that all stakeholders should contribute to prevent the problem.

He advised that the government should expand the personality building of the youth, religious institutions should help the youth to develop good personality and the family should help the children to grow up in order.

Explaining that mental illness cannot be prevented by treatment alone, the director said that in addition to psychiatric institutions, schools and the above-mentioned stakeholders should play their role.
