The Governor of Oromia Region, Mr. Shimelis Abdisa, participated in a forum organized by Nekemte to improve the production and quality of coffee.

 

In a message on his social networking page, the head of government said that the work done to increase coffee production in the Oromia region since 2011 has been yielding encouraging results, but he said that much work is expected to reach a quality that makes it competitive in the international market.

 

He stated that this is preventing coffee producers and our country from getting the benefits they should get from coffee.

 

Ato Shimelis announced that the movement to improve coffee production and quality, which started today by involving all stakeholders, aims to fill this gap.

 

He noted that the work of improving coffee production and quality follows the chain from the farm to the consumer, and said that to achieve the expected results, it requires careful work at every level.

 

He said that it is a priority to identify the type of soil and the climate and prepare the appropriate type of coffee and after the quality of the coffee is produced, it is a priority to give the coffee a grade.

 

He said that in order to give a level to coffee, starting with coffee tasters, empowering coffee levelers and preparing the necessary infrastructure for that, we should work diligently so that our coffee is accepted at the international level.

 

He announced that modernizing the process from picking and drying to storage, from grinding and packaging to marketing is an important task in order to provide internationally accepted coffee.

 

In the process, after reaching the level of the production chain from the farmer to the consumer, the main goal will be the production of international standard coffee with continuous support and monitoring, the head of government said.

 

In order to achieve the goal, it is important to provide continuous training and support to coffee producers, cooperatives and stakeholders at the international level of coffee, Ato Shimelis said.

 

He said that setting up this kind of system will not only allow coffee producers to get the value of their efforts, but also allow our country to get its share of the market and earn foreign currency by offering world-class coffee to the world market.

 

Securing the quality of coffee is our key focus, Mr. Shimels said, and for this, coffee producers, leadership at all levels, coffee merchants and stakeholders will play a critical role.

 

Due to the fact that the head of government has not yet worked on the quality of coffee, those who are upset that we have lost the benefits that we were supposed to get from coffee, expressed their gratitude for organizing today's coffee quality assurance forum.
