At the national level, we should work hard to encourage young female diplomats - President Sahlework Zewde

**********************

President Sahlework Zewde said that efforts should be made to encourage the participation of young women in diplomacy.

The president said this at a program on the second "International Day of Women in Diplomacy".

Ethiopia's president has mentioned the work that Ethiopia is doing by providing mentorship to university students to increase the participation of young women in diplomacy.

He mentioned that 1,500 young students have attended the program so far.

Therefore, he emphasized that it is necessary to work in cooperation to increase and encourage the participation of young female diplomats at the continent as well as at the national level.

On the other hand, it is necessary to focus on increasing the participation of women in peace and tranquility and conflict resolution, said the president.

Claver Gatete, Secretary General of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, on his part, emphasized that it is necessary to work with attention to increase the participation of women in ambassadorships, foreign affairs and other areas of diplomacy at the international level.

He added that action based on gender equality is a key issue in achieving the United Nations Agenda 2030 as well as the Sustainable Development Goals.

The implementation of Resolution No. 1325 passed by the United Nations Security Council in 2000 to increase the participation of women in peace and security was also discussed.

The Minister of Women and Social Affairs Ergoge Tesfaye (Dr.) has detailed the attention and process that Ethiopia has given to the implementation of United Nations Resolution 1325 in the National Action Plan.

He explained that by aligning the issues set in the resolution with the country's programs, peace and tranquility, national consultation, capacity building, decision-making and other activities are being done to increase women's participation.

Information shows that the United Nations decided to celebrate the "International Day of Women in Diplomacy" on June 24 every year in order to create awareness and push for governments to pay more attention to the participation of women in diplomacy at the 76th General Assembly.

Today's program was organized by the "Coalition of Women in Diplomacy in Ethiopia" and ESA reported that ambassadors, diplomats, representatives of international institutions and other stakeholders attended the event.
