The Ethiopian Electricity Service has announced that 71 individuals who have committed crimes related to theft of electricity infrastructure, breach of trust and other related issues have been sentenced to prison in the 2016 fiscal year. 

Melaku Taye, Director of Corporate Communication Directorate of Ethiopian Electricity Service, told Bisrat Radio and Television that 71 individuals have been found guilty of the crimes they were accused of while investigating 314 criminal cases.

Each was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment ranging from 5 months to 18 years depending on the conviction. He said that 65 million birr has been caused to the institution due to this criminal activity. The theft of electricity infrastructure is having a negative impact on the service delivery of the institution and is also causing complaints from customers.

Therefore, it should be everyone's responsibility to prevent theft and damage to electrical infrastructure and protect it as one's own property.

                                                                Ato Melaku Taye added to Bisrat Radio and Television that when the society sees irresponsible individuals causing danger to the electricity infrastructure or when it sees something suspicious, it should be reported to the security body or the institution and prevent the problem together.
