Scientists say a rare helium liquid called helium-3 has been discovered in volcanic rocks on Canada's Baffin Island. The discovery is said to confirm the long-standing theory that noble gas is flowing from the Earth's core.

CNN quoted members of the team as reporting that helium-4 was additionally found in the rocks.

While helium-4 is common on Earth, the discovery of helium-3 in the rocks on Baffin Island was surprising, the researchers said.

The results of the study were recently published in the journal Nature.

Lead researcher Forrest Horton, an associate scientist in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, said that helium-3 is found in the subsurface at a lower level than helium-4. .

Horton added, "Helium-3 is rare on Earth because it doesn't store up in our planet, but instead vaporizes and freezes into space as the Earth's rocky core sizzles like hot water on a stove."
