Habtamu Taye, Deputy Director General of the Ethiopian Blood and Tissue Bank Service, told Fana Broadcasting Corporation that since the establishment of the Ethiopian Eye Bank in June 1995, 1,943 people have seen their eyes restored.

According to a national study conducted around 1998, about 300,000 people need eyelash extensions and this number may increase.

The first person who pledged his eyeballs in Ethiopia was the former president of the Federi, Girma Woldegiorgis, the Deputy Director General said.

He pointed out that the society is not aware of the widespread donation of eyeballs due to some cultural and religious reasons.

Ato Habtamu told Fana Broadcasting Corporation that eyeball donation can be done by anyone over the age of 18 who has made a voluntary promise while alive, and when a person who has not made a promise while alive dies, the eyeball can be removed with the consent of the deceased's family.

They said that the eyelid should be lifted within 8 hours of someone's death, and the lifting process will be completed within 30 minutes.

He suggested that surgery should be performed on the donor within 14 days after an eyelid is removed from the donor.

They confirmed that those who get the service are those who are blind due to eyeball scars and not due to blindness caused by other diseases and accidents.

After the eyeball is collected, four private ophthalmology institutions located in Addis Ababa, Menilek II General Specialized Hospital, St. Paul's Specialized Hospital, Gonder Specialized Teaching Hospital, Jimma Specialized Teaching Hospital and Hawassa Specialized Teaching Hospital will perform surgery for those who need an eyeball. .

He said that the main thing to remove an eyeball is that it has light, and after it is removed, an examination will be done considering diseases that can be transmitted through the eyeball and blood so as not to cause health problems to the person who donates it.

The deputy director confirmed that if there is a situation where infectious bacteria are present, the eyeball will not be transferred to another person.
