Construction of Koisha hydropower dam has reached 61 percent: Government

The Koisha Hydroelectric Power Plant, which is being constructed across the Omo River, has the capacity to generate 1,800 megawatts of electricity, and the total cost of the project is 2.4 billion euros.

Koisha Hydropower Project Deputy Manager Engineer Abayneh Getnet mentioned that the dam will have 6 units and each will have a generating capacity of 300 megawatts.

It was also mentioned that the construction of the power house has reached 52%.

Deputy manager of the project Engineer Abayneh explained that the dam will be 201 meters high.

He said the dam, which has a man-made lake stretching over 130 kilometers, will hold 6.5 billion cubic meters of water. They said that the total man-made lake covers 200 square kilometers.

On his part, the Minister of State for Government Communication Services, Eta Safithit Kasa, stated that the construction of the Koisha hydropower dam is suitable for the environment.

He mentioned that Koisha hydropower dam will be an additional destination and attraction for the sector, along with the tourism benefits of the artificial lake in the future.

The dam is being built under the contract of Wie Bjöld (formerly Salini). Engineer Zopis, the project manager of We Built, said that the capacity of Ethiopian experts is increasing in the construction of dams.

As an example, he said that the Koisha hydropower project is currently being built by Ethiopians in various fields, from labor to high-skilled workers.
