Lucy's Fossil 50th Anniversary Program Has National Significance Beyond Scientific Interest

The Ninth East African Paleoanthropology and Paleontology Research Conference was recently held in Addis Ababa, which was part of the 50th anniversary commemoration of Zakre-Lucy.

 

On the side of the conference, a photo exhibition was opened in commemoration of the Adwa victory, and today, the participants of the conference visited various historical places in Addis Ababa.

 

Among the participants of the conference are scholars from the Human Origins Research Institute of the Arizona State University, which studies extensively in Ethiopia in the field of paleoanthropology.

 

The director of the institute, the well-known researcher in the field, Ethiopian Professor Yohannes Hailesalase; He said that commemorating the 50th anniversary of Lucy's remains until November next year is of great importance.

 

He also mentioned that the recent Lucy Fossil Memorial Conference and Exhibition was a successful conference attended by more than 240 paleontologists from 34 countries.

 

He explained that the fact that the conference was held in Ethiopia, the birthplace of the human race, makes it special. The participants of the conference also mentioned that it was celebrated in a different way than previous conferences.

 

Today, the researchers visited Adwa Victory Memorial, National Museum and Unity Park to see Ethiopia's history and heritage.

 

The visitors expressed their great satisfaction with the places and historical artifacts they saw.

 

The professor said that the conference and the visit of the academics are of great importance to build the image of Ethiopia and promote tourism resources to the rest of the world.

He also stated that Ethiopia does not have a fixed source of human fossils.

 

Professor Donald Johnson, who discovered Lucy's fossils, said that the visit of well-known researchers in the field will play an important role in the construction of Ethiopia's landscape.

 

He pointed out that the way Ethiopia organized its heritage and history by itself and made it open to visitors was an opportunity that was unexpected and brought great joy to the scholars.

 

The Director General said that a new chapter has been opened in the tourism sector. He said that tourist destinations that integrate natural, historical and cultural heritages are being widely developed in Ethiopia.

 

Therefore, in addition to promoting Ethiopia through research, the researchers of the field, who are influential in the world, said that it will help to promote tourism resources that are being developed.

 

The 3.2 million-year-old human remains, Lucy or Wonder, were found on November 24, 1974, in the Afar region, in a place called "Hadar".

 

This year, the 50th anniversary of the discovery of Lucy's remains is being commemorated.
